Accessible by Default
The response meets recognised accessibility standards, so a person using assistive technology can read it without having to ask for an alternative.
Intent
Having to ask for an accessible version means finding out the response is unreadable, then waiting again. A response that meets accessibility standards to begin with removes that round trip.
How to test it
An assessor scores the criterion against a single response:
- Score 2
- The response meets recognised accessibility standards, so a person using assistive technology can read it as delivered.
- Score 1
- Part of the response is accessible and part of it is not.
- Score 0
- A person using assistive technology cannot read the response without asking for an alternative.

This criterion reflects Article 12(1) of the UK GDPR. That mapping is a guide, not a legal test: conformance is judged against the criterion, not the article.
