Where the response is addressed to a child, it uses language the child can understand.

Intent

A child holds the right of access in their own name. A response written for an adult reader does not deliver it to them.

How to test it

An assessor scores the criterion against a single response:

Score 2: The response uses words and sentences a child of the age addressed can understand.
Score 1: The response is simplified in places but keeps legal or technical passages a child could not follow.
Score 0: The response is written as it would be for an adult.
Not applicable: The response is not addressed to a child.
